This is a list of alternatives to popular software I feel they're good enough to recommend to anyone who don't really know about software in general, and I feel confident enough to give some tech support for and help someone installing it.
Speaking of which, if you need any help for installing and migrating said software I'm here to help :)
| Category | Software | Alternative | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blogging | WordPress | Ghost | Most like WordPress, most likely to recommend to some muggle who don't know web dev and needs an admin panel to edit their pages |
| Hugo | Static page generator, does not have the admin panel thing, kinda good for templating | ||
| Operating systems | Windows | Linux Mint, Debian, Arch, Alpine | Perfect for giving a second life to computers that won't support Windows 11 and will lose support for Windows 10 in 2025, or for a self-hosted server |
| macOS | macOS is fine but there's a few things I don't like, like no dev really like porting their software to macOS unless they're a Mac user themselves | ||
| Cloud storage | Google Drive, OneDrive | NextCloud | Fairly useful on a self-hosted server, when you want to keep your data offline |
| Web browsers | Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge | Vivaldi | It looks better, they don't try to shove AI down the user's throat, they try to support µBlock for as long as possible and there's vertical tabs |
| Text editors (IDE) | Visual Studio Code | Gram | Looks better, faster and less bloated, but less extensions |
| Chat clients | Discord, others | Halloy | The best chat protocol is still IRC, change my mind Halloy in particular looks good with custom config, and supports a lot of the newer IRCv3 specs |
